Faculty of Land Reclamation and Environmental Engineering

The Faculty of Land Reclamation and Environmental Engineering (FLREE) was established in 1970, with one major field of study: Land Reclamation and Rural Development, belonging to Civil Engineering. After 1989, FLREE has witnessed a rapid growth through continuous development as two other specializations were opened and accredited: Environmental Protection and Agricultural Engineering, in the field of Environmental Engineering (1990), and Land Measurement and Cadastral Survey, in the field of Geodesy (2000).

First specialization also provide part-time courses. In 2004, the specialization Construction Management and Engineering was established in the field of Engineering, Economics and Management and recently also the specialisation of Land Reclamation and Rural Development. According to the Bologna Process, FLREE organizes a 2nd Cycle of qualification, an MSc programme in Rural Engineering and Environmental Protection, and a 3rd Cycle, Doctoral studies.

The Faculty is supported by a state-of-the-art infrastructure, consisting of lecture halls, seminar rooms, technological platforms, a practical training centre, and 30 highly-equipped laboratories for most subjects: Computer Science, Physics, Database Management Systems, Computer Assisted Design, Multimedia, Topography, Geotechnics, Building Materials, Technologies, Hydraulics, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Ecology-Microbiology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Land Surveying and Photogrammetry, etc.

The teaching staff and material resources provide relevant European-oriented training for the job market, which explains the particular interest in our courses and areas of specialism. At present, about 1,600 students attend the full-time programmes and approximately 2,000 students are enrolled in the part-time programmes.

The prestige of our Faculty is enhanced by the successful research activity carried out in the laboratories grouped under the auspices of the Centre for Excellence in Research operating within FLREE together with the Centre for Project Management, and the research performed by the UNESCO Department of Integrated Rural Development, etc.
